Reflecting on Iceland
While my time on the island was short, it was highly productive. I completed a set of artist books titled LAND + SKY, and VATN.
VATN means water in Icelandic. Iceland is rich with water: cold water, hot springs water, boiling lake water, glaciers, glacier rivers, hot spring rivers, the seas and so on and so on. Until you have lived in a place where water is limited, such as the American West you may not really understand how precious it is (or at least I didn't growing up on the East Coast). Gullkistan Center for Creativity is located on a lake on the touristy but magical Golden Circle.
What continues to awe me about Iceland is that you can stand on a black sand beach and look at the rocks and ocean, turn your head and behind you see a mountain with a glacier on top, and on top of that in the sky, the Northern Lights (which I did not see the entire week I was there... so that gives me an excuse to go again, right?!).
Three artist books, titled, collectively: VATN (GLACIER, LAKE, RIVER, OCEAN)
are about that:
Water from the Glacier - to the River- to the Sea
Water from the Stream - to the Lake - back to the Stream
Water from the Mountains - to the Hot Spring Rivers - and Beyond
